L-Tyrosine Amino Acid
The determining factor for the production of dopamine, norephinephrine and epinephrine is the amount of free L-Tryosine found in the brain
Low tyrosine levels may lead to apathy, impaired memory and low concentration, along with fatigue and weakness
Tyrosine is a conditionally essential amino acid. Once in the body, it is converted into the important neurotransmitters, dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline). The production of these neurotransmitters is essentially dependent on the amount of free L-tyrosine in the brain.
A decreased production of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine, due to a deficiency of tyrosine in the brain can lead to apathy, low concentration, impaired memory, loss of pigmentation (skin and hair), low blood pressure, fatigue and weakness and others.
The body partially depends on the supply of L-tyrosine from your diet, but also from the conversion of L-tyrosine from the amino acid phenylalanine (phenylalanine converts to tyrosine in the liver).
The current western diet is extremely low in L-tyrosine (and L-phenylalanine, an essential amino acid, meaning it can only be obtained through diet or supplementation), which can consequently cause a deficiency in the body. This, in turn, can lead to a decreased synthesis of these very important neurotransmitters - dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. An estimate of 67% - 90% of phenylalanine in food is converted to L-tyrosine.
As with amino acids supplements, your body needs vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) as a cofactor to ensure correct metabolism. To help rule out any possible deficiency of L-Tyrosine, you may wish to take a vitamin B complex alongside L-Tyrosine
- Most amino acids come in two forms: D- or L- (such as L-tyrosine or D-tyrosine) D- amino acid is a mirror image of the L-amino acid, in other words, the D-form is a backward image.
- Both can be taken. However, the L-form is considered the more effective for overall human health.
