Maintains healthy bones and teeth, muscle function and proper coagulation
Calcium Plus - Supports healthy bones and teeth, and is important for heart health and its correct function
Calcium is best known for its function in the development and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. However, it is also necessary for muscle function including that of the heart and, when at optimal levels, ensures proper coagulation. It is used by the muscles to help produce energy and plays a role in heart-muscle function and muscle response.
Abnormalities in coagulation and heart-muscle function rarely occur when calcium levels are balanced and optimal.
In the absence of adequate dietary calcium, the body goes into a 'negative calcium balance', which forces it to extract calcium from its skeletal bones stores (bones) so it can be used for many of its bodily needs. This, of course, if it is continuous or long-term, will weaken the bones.
The absorption of calcium can be positively influenced by vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is important for the correct absorption of calcium in the intestines and bones. Without sufficient vitamin D3, calcium will not integrate into the bones, which, as a result, will become soft.
Calcium also plays a crucial role in nerve-impulse transmission, is needed for the absorption of vitamin B12, is involved in coagulation, cell growth and hormone metabolism. Calcium also contributes to the maintenance of normal energy metabolism, activates numerous enzymes including digestive enzymes, and plays a role in cell division and cell proliferation.
Numerous factors affect the uptake of calcium in the body: adequate exercise and vitamin D3 are essential to an increased uptake, while, too little, has the opposite effect, leaving us with a decreased uptake. In addition, the elderly have a slower calcium uptake, and, in women, the hormonal changes during menopause adversely affect calcium uptake. Alcohol consumption is also responsible for a reduced uptake of calcium.
Magnesium should also be taken with calcium to help protect the heart. Magnesium can help avoid a build-up of calcium in the arteries and ensure it gets to the bones. Magnesium is a natural channel blocker of calcium in the cells. When an excess of calcium builds up in the cells (namely, the cells of arteries), it can cause plaque build-up.
Alcohol consumption is also responsible for a reduced intake of calcium.
