5-HTP improves serotonin levels, and is important for the production of melatonin

5-HTP - Promotes relaxation and calmness, improves mood and boosts positive emotions

The 5-HTP amino acid improves serotonin levels and is important for the production of melatonin, a hormone that aids circadian rhythms (sleep/wake cycle). 5-HTP has been seen to help with quality of sleep (sleeplessness and nightmares).  It also helps control mood and decrease anxiety, as well as helping to control appetite and body temperature.

5-HTP is a non-essential amino acid and is derived from the amino acid L-tryptophan. In the body, 5-HTP converts into the brain chemical serotonin, which is why it improves sleep.

As with most amino acid supplements your body needs vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) as a cofactor to ensure correct amino acid metabolism.

5-HTP is the direct precursor of serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. Serotonin is important for the manufacture of melatonin, the sleep hormone, that aids biorhythm regulation (sleep/wake cycle).

Optimal serotonin levels may improve mood, energy, and metabolism. It has been seen to play an important function in mood and can positively affect emotions and sleep. 5-HTP helps to promote relaxation and calmness in the body and brain.

  • Magnesium helps prolong the benefits of 5-HTP.
  • A 1995 “Journal of Neural Transmission” study demonstrated that supplementation with vitamin B6 increases the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin in primate animal models.
